NASA's Golden Records: A Message for Extraterrestrials
Time Capsule of Our World
Inspired by the plaque on Pioneer 10, NASA embarked on a more ambitious project for the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. The Voyager Golden Records are identical phonograph records that were launched into space in 1977. These records carry a "time capsule" containing a story of our world, intended for extraterrestrial life.
Sound and Images
Each Golden Record holds a diverse collection of sounds and images. These include spoken greetings in 55 languages, music from various cultures, animal sounds, and a variety of natural phenomena. The records also contain images of the Earth, our solar system, and representative scientific concepts.
Protective Packaging
The Golden Records are encased in durable aluminum jackets designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space. They also include a cartridge and needle for playback. Symbolic language instructions explain the origin of the spacecraft and provide guidance on how to decode the contents.
Copper Phonograph LP
The Sagan committee chose a copper phonograph LP as the ideal medium for the Golden Record. Over six weeks, they meticulously curated a collection of sounds and images that represented the diversity and achievements of human civilization.
